Australia's economy remains resilient
The value of merchandise exports from Western Australia decreased by 4.0 per cent to A$5.6 billion between July and August 2009. This gave Western Australia a 37.0 per cent share of national export earnings in August. The state's export earnings are down by 26.1 per cent over the year to August.
Across Australia, the value of merchandise exports decreased by 0.5 per cent to A$15.1 billion between July and August 2009. National export earnings are down by 26.2 per cent over the year to August.
The value of merchandise imports into Western Australia decreased by 8.2 per cent to A$2.0 billion between July and August 2009. This gave Western Australia a 13.1 per cent share of the national import bill in August. The state's import bill is down by 26.4 per cent over the year to August.
Across Australia, the value of merchandise imports decreased by 7.3 per cent to A$15.5 billion between July and August 2009. The national import bill is down by 15.9 per cent over the year to August.
Services exports continued their recent improvement, rising by 0.6 per cent to A$4.5 billion in August. Over the past 5 years, Australia?s services exports have recorded an average growth rate of 7.8 per cent.
The reduction in the August deficit reflects a decline in imports of goods and services for the month, with imports of consumption, intermediate and other merchandise goods all declining.
Encouragingly, the export of manufactured goods increased by 2.8 per cent to A$3.2 billion, which is a positive development given the challenges arising from an appreciating dollar.
